Get Revved Up for a Delaware Road Trip

“Road trip, anyone?”

If the idea of spending long hours inside a car and memories of the road trip movie classic Vacation (celebrating its 30th anniversary this year) bring a chill of fear and dread down your spine, take a deep breath and inhale the crisp fresh air. Road trips are an adventurous way to get an up close and personal tour of America’s natural beauty including the Delaware Water Gap National Forest. The majestic Delaware River, spectacular hills, valleys, and waterfalls make it an ideal vacation destination for travelers year-round.

When you take a drive along Interstate 80 or Rt. 611, you will encounter the Delaware Water Gap, which is bounded by Mt. Minsi in Pennsylvania and Mt. Tammany in New Jersey. This scenic wonder was formed after millions of years of uplift, erosion, and glacial activity. Today, lakes and streams flow through forests surrounded by Pennsylvania’s state tree, the hemlock.

While visiting this scenic wonder, your inner road tripper will have plenty of outdoor activities to choose from including hiking, biking and camping. After spending the day exploring the trails, relax and recharge at The Whistling Swan Inn located in nearby Stanhope, NJ. You can lay back in the inn’s hammock with a good novel or soak in the neighborhood’s sights and sounds from the porch rockers. End the day savoring homemade cookies and a warm beverage in front of the parlor’s crackling fire.

If the canoeing, climbing and fishing have worked up a mighty appetite, or if you just want an excuse to enjoy some delicious food, follow the edible aromas to Newark, DE, for the 7th Annual Restaurant Week. From January 21st to 27th, the culinary celebration will highlight the area’s fabulous local restaurants and their top gourmet fare. When you’ve had your fill of delicious food, return to the Elk Forge Bed and Breakfast in Elkton, MD. Located just minutes from Newark, DE, this peaceful B&B’s outdoor hot tub, on-site Day Spa, and beautiful gardens and cozy fireplaces will help ease you into deep relaxation.

The Delaware Water Gap, with its 40-mile scenic river valley, is a must-see stop on your road trip adventure. So, pack your bags, load up the car and put it in drive for an escape through Delaware’s breathtaking landscape.

In the coming weeks we’ll be exploring a few more picturesque road trip destinations so make sure to check back. Also, our “Road Trips, Anyone?” Pinterest board will offer a visual tour of some America’s most spectacular scenic drives including the Delaware Water Gap. You never know where a full tank of gas, an adventuresome spirit, and the wide-open road will take you!
