Sometimes an escape from your hectic life is in order. But, if you can’t just stop, drop and roll out of town, try getting lost in a movie. From exotic filming locales to 19th-century wardrobes, movies have a way of transporting you instantly into another time and place. It’s the magic of motion pictures, which will be on full display this Sunday, February 24th, when the 2013 Academy Awards are handed out.
B&Bs are no stranger to escapism, of course. As a top getaway destination, they give travelers a chance to leave their day-to-day routines behind and relax in a unique setting including historic Victorians, grand Greek Revivals, quaint mountain hideaways or modern urban retreats.
But, the similarities don’t end there. A few inns also have been featured alongside some of Hollywood’s mega-stars. In 2007, The Lanaux Mansion in New Orleans, LA, was a location for the Oscar-nominated movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button starring Brad Pitt. The inn’s striking exterior and interior caught the eye of Button’s director, David Fincher, and his supervising location manager, Bill Doyle, who were looking for a charming home for Benjamin’s father. With its antique furnishings, fireplaces, and colorful garden, The Lanaux Mansion won the role.
While some B&Bs have made ideal movie locations, others are situated in areas tied to this year’s Oscar-nominated films. The bustling political, historical, and prestigious atmosphere of Washington, DC, is the home of the American Guest House and the backdrop for Best Picture nominee Lincoln. From February 11th-December 15th, this B&B is offering an Abraham Lincoln Getaway Tour Package inspired by Steven Spielberg’s movie including a one-night stay for two and a pair of tickets for a tour of Ford’s Theater and President Lincoln’s Cottage. End your day enjoying the hot chocolate and cookies, immaculate rooms, and the peaceful and welcoming setting of this 12-room inn.
Even though you can’t attend the Oscars this year, you can still grab popcorn and a seat at your local movie theater and spend a few hours exploring a different world. Or, you can treat yourself like a Hollywood star and enjoy some R&R at a B&B that was made for the movies.
