In a brilliant setting of Rhododendrons, Azalea, Begonias and, of course, Camellias (80 varieties!) is the unsurpassed Healdsburg, California Bed and Breakfast, the Camellia Inn. Steeped in what they call “a happy history”, the Camellia Inn graces the town of Healdsburg, dubbed one of the top 10 small towns in the US.
Two short blocks from the center of town is a 19th-century plaza surrounded by wine hospitality rooms, art galleries, local taverns, antique stores and boutique shopping not to mention Michelin-starred and Zagat rated restaurants. The Camellia Inn is perfectly situated for the frequent visitor or the tourist new to this astonishingly varietal area.
California Wine Country
Since The Camellia Inn offers passes for discounted wine tastings to over 100 wineries, it is clear that wine is one of the key attractions to this Sonoma County area. But wine alone does not a vacation make: opportunities abound: family activities such as ziplines, balloon or horseback adventures, kayaking and hiking. Couples getaways include spa relaxation, concerts, garden tours and adult beverage excitement from local taverns and world-famous breweries.
As if all this was not magical enough, keep your eyes peeled for the Healdsburg Fairy Doors (pdf). Innkeeper Lucy Lewand speculates it is their Celtic Music Evenings that attracted the sprites to her Inn, where one of the fairy doors appeared one day. Tiny offerings of fairy food and holiday decorations amuse and delight locals.
2019 Wildfires
Reality set in to Healdsburg in 2019, when the Kincade Fire devastated 77,000 acres of the Sonoma countryside. Finally declared fully contained in November, the Kincade Fire tested the resilience and courage of area residents. They want visitors to know that the town is 100% “back in business” and, while the scars of the fire appear here and there, and will take years to heal, the natural beauty and celebration of life that is Sonoma County is still apparent and thriving. Nothing stands in the way of full visitor enjoyment of the area.
Meet the Inkeepers
Innkeeper Lucy Lewand is the daughter of Innkeepers, and her parents Ray and Delmas Lewand turned this historic home into a bed and breakfast in 1981. Built in 1871 for pioneer Ransome Powell, it became best known for the owner who took over in 1892, Dr. J.W. Seawall. Dr. Seawall turned a wing of the building into the area hospital and saved the town from a typhoid epidemic by chlorinating the local water. His healing touch still graces the town in the health of the generations to follow.
This Sonoma bed and breakfast has 9 rooms offering a wide variety of options, from the budget “Sun Room” to the Queen and King Rooms that include suites. Gas fireplaces, standard tubs, and whirlpool tubs can be found in various rooms, including a family suite choice. 1920s-style decor features luxurious linens and towels. Breakfast is locally sourced, organic and sustainable, with special dietary accommodations available upon request. Free concerts and special events in Healdsburg make The Camellia Inn a centrally located spot for relaxation that provides access to a multitude of entertainment options.
History, flowers, community resilience and a bit of self-indulgence are all within the scope of The Camellia Inn. If you are lucky, you might come across founder Ray Lewand, Lucy’s father, pouring local wine and telling stories of Healdsburg. See you there!
