Return To Normal
Had enough of this crazy world lately? Looking for that unique place of solace where you can regain your sanity in a world unlike any we’ve known? Look no further than the Magnolia Springs Bed & Breakfast, near Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Mag-no-lia. Close your eyes and say it slowly. You can almost feel your blood pressure drop. Don’t you just love the sound of it, the way the syllables roll off the tongue? And its aroma – Seductive as a sunset kiss on the beach. Oh, the promise of it…
The magnolia scent has been described as ‘sweet candy’ and ‘citrus-honey’. No doubt you’ll come up with your own superlatives once you begin relaxing at Magnolia Springs.
Located nine miles north of the coast, this serene, out-of-the-way village has an old-world quality that is very much alive. It is the last community on the Magnolia River to have year-round mail delivered by boat. Mail by boat. Now doesn’t that harken to a bygone era when things were slower, more relaxed?
While the B&B is described as having classic ‘Old Southern Home’ appeal, it has been painstakingly restored. The pine beaded board and rare curly pine trim work seen throughout the entire structure is a visual delight. An abundance of brilliant shrubs and flowering plants gently embrace either side of the full length porch adding to the cozy ambiance so prevalent on the inside.
As you might expect from a historical structure, each room is unique in its own way. And yet a consistent charm is present throughout. Simple yet elegant appointments capture the eye at almost every turn in the impeccably maintained rooms that reflect the quality and passion that went into the Inn’s restoration.
History
Any home built over 150 years ago in the Deep South will undoubtedly have a long and colorful story. This Inn is no different with its history inexorably linked with much of the turmoil of the mid-19th century.
It was initially constructed as a plantation residence to support several turpentine stills in the area. As a 20,000-strong force of Union soldiers approached in 1865, the owners decided to torch the stills rather than have them fall into the hands of the enemy. Fortunately, the residence itself was spared.
Between then and 1996 when current owners David Worthington and Eric Bigelow purchased the home and began its renovation, the home changed hands numerous times.
Countless hours of removing 100 years of paint, caulking, and old cement have gone into its restoration as David and Eric have labored to bring out the beauty of the original yellow color of the pine wood. Subtle modern touches have breathed new life into this magnificent home all coming together to infuse and complement the rich history woven from room to rafter.
There is much to learn about the Inn and the surrounding community that will only deepen your appreciation for the natural beauty of this timeless haven. David and Eric are the consummate hosts and will make it their mission to ensure your stay and overall experience is one you’ll tell your friends about.
Adventure
A short drive south from the Inn lies the great Gulf of Mexico and all its action. The standard fare for beach shopping is on full display but in a less ostentatious way than you’ll find at more tourist-oriented locations.
Want some fresh-caught fish for dinner? You have two choices: Make a reservation at any number of excellent restaurants and tuck into your favorite plate. Or go out and catch it yourself. There are any number of deep-sea fishing outfitters available to indulge your seamanship and angling expertise if you choose. And Chez Chef is only too happy to expertly prepare your catch of the day.
On the tamer side, there are myriad activities the whole family can partake in along the boardwalk or up and down the beach itself. Snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, and boogie boarding are but a few of them.
Of course, being a beautiful beach, there is always the standard default if you’re really dedicated to chilling. Not into the crowds and want to get your hermit on? Simply pack a beach bag and take a hike. To the more secluded areas of the beach that is. Once removed from the crowds that populate the high-rises and hotels, a short stroll away in either direction will soon find you with a beach you can call your own. Be forewarned though, the dazzling white powder sand and sublime, genteel surf may cause you to lose track of time. But then, isn’t that the point…?
Sanctuary
Once you’ve answered the siren call of the day’s adventures, from shopping’s bounty to a deeper tan, it’s comforting to know you can return to the Inn for much-needed R&R. No reservations needed for a nap on the porch or a tree-shaded hammock. Bring a book, or catch up on some writing. But no work allowed!
Special Events
Steeped in a history as rich as the Magnolia Springs B&B, it is not surprising rooms are booked months or even seasons in advance. The beauty of the grounds and the surrounding area make this a first-rate location for a much-needed getaway-for-one, a family decompress, or a wedding party.
Check with David and Eric for your specific event but plan well in advance. With nearby beaches of white powder sand, a rich history to explore, or a porch made for napping, those who wait will be late to the party that all starts with the seductive aroma of the Mag-no-lia.
