The Green Gables Inn, located in Pacific Grove, California just across the road from the world-famous Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail, is one of California’s most prized possessions. This quaint and historic destination was voted one of the top 50 Small Hotels by Conde Nast Travel readers, and for good reason. At Green Gables Inn you will be swept back in time to an era where simplicity and luxury go hand in hand and sophistication is a part of everyday life.
The Victorian home, which has gone through numerous transitions over the years, was built in 1888 by William Lacy, an English architect and engineer living in Los Angeles. While the property was presumably meant to be a vacation home, the Lacy’s never spent time there, but rather a friend of the family was the first to occupy the home in 1889. Over the years the redwood framed masterpiece of Victorian architecture, with beautiful brass and copper fixtures, rich woodwork and solid maple floors, was bought and sold a number of times. It wasn’t until 1954 that rooms were ever rented out and not until 1983 that it was turned into the lovely inn that it is today.
The property was purchased in 1971 by Roger and Sally Post as a family home. It was the couple’s four daughters that later turned it into the Green Gables Inn and it is still owned by the family today.
What to See in Pacific Grove
The quiet town of Pacific Grove is known for its lack of tourists and its authentic 19th century charm and both are what so many visitors love about the area. As quiet as it is, though, there is still plenty of excitement for the more adventurous visitor, with no shortage of peacefulness for those looking for a little rest and relaxation.
The Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail itself offers plenty of opportunity to explore the natural wonders of the area. There are also some great festivals that take place in the area throughout the year, including the Pebble Beach Food & Wine Festival in April, the Bach Festival in July and the Monterey Jazz Festival in September. Less than 15 miles away visitors can tour the Bernardus Vineyard and sample some local wine as well. However you decide to spend your days visiting, rest assured, the Green Gables Inn is the perfect starting point to explore all that the area has to offer.
Sweet Dreams of Days Gone By
At the end of each day of your visit you will be able to return to Green Gables Inn and enjoy the sense of being in an era gone by. The 11 guestrooms, each with their own fireplace, boasts comfort and individuality, with each one featuring unique furnishings and a different layout. Guests who want a sweeping view of the ocean can choose the Balcony Roo. For those looking for something cozier there is the Gable Room within the attic with a ladder leading to it. And for guests who wish to experience the English architectural features of the home there is the Chapel Guestroom with its wooden beams and angled ceilings. Whichever room you choose at Green Gables Inn you can be sure that you will fall asleep dreaming of another time and wake to the hospitality of an era gone by.
The Unique Amenities at Green Gables Inn
The Green Gables Inn offers amenities that are traditionally seen in bed and breakfast establishments but they are anything but typical. Breakfast consists of a buffet featuring an array of items, including a hot entrée and delicious home baked item. Guests also have the opportunity to borrow bikes to explore the beautiful surrounding area. But the real star of the show is the picnic that Green Gables provides for guests each day of their stay, which consists of wine, cheese and freshly baked cookies.
The experience at Green Gables Inn is unique and special. Whether you live near Pacific Grove or plan to be just passing through, it is worth it to stop and enjoy the sense of being in another era.
