Located in the historic town of Taneytown, Maryland and situated at the foot of the Catoctin Mountains, sits an enchanting estate that spreads across 24 splendid acres. On it there is a lovely mansion and multiple outbuildings that possess a grace and luxury of days gone by, allowing guests of the Antrim 1844 Country House Hotel to take a step back in time.
The charming mansion, fittingly, dates back to 1844, when it was built as a residence for then owners Margaret Ann McKaleb and her husband Major Andrew G. Ege. Many of the outbuildings on the property were built at this time as well, deeming it as one of the most splendid properties of the time. In 1961 the mansion and its surrounding land were added to the National Historic Trust Register of historic places.
Over the years the Antrim property passed through many hands before it began to host guests in 1988. The current owners, Dorothy and Richard Mollet, began with first opening the mansion as a bed and breakfast but later renovated multiple buildings on the property to use as guest houses as well. Today guests can stay in luxurious accommodations spread out across 11 different buildings on the property, each with their own unique layout and décor that stands true to the time they were built. The Antrim 1844 Country House Hotel truly offers a one-of-a-kind experience.
What to Do During Your Stay
While you could spend days exploring the Antrim property alone, there is plenty to do and see both on and off the property. Not only is it located in close enough proximity to three metropolitan areas; Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia – that you can take a day trip to any of them, but it is also close to numerous historic sites. In fact, the Gettysburg Civil War Battlefields are only 15 minutes away, as are the historic towns of Hanover, Frederick and Westminster.
If you choose to stay on the property you will not be disappointed either, as you could keep yourself occupied without leaving all day. You will find world-class dining at the Smokehouse Restaurant, where the French American cuisine is so expertly prepared that it has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence for more than a decade. The restaurant has also received multiple awards for its spectacular wine list that features over 2,400 individual selections comprising 17,000 bottles. For a more laid-back experience there is the Pickwick Scottish Pub, where you can enjoy fine spirits from around the world.
Feeling like enjoying the great outdoors and the beautiful summer weather that Maryland has to offer? Relax by the spectacular crystal-clear pool or participate in a game of horseshoes, volleyball, badminton or croquet. You can even just spend the day walking the beautiful grounds and enjoying the scenery. However you decide to spend your time, you will be glad that you chose the Antrim Country House Hotel because there are endless possibilities.
Resting in Luxury
Despite the fact that the entire property is a luxurious view into history – with its period furnishings, rich wood accents and exposed brick – the real star of the show is the charming accommodations. The property features 10 other buildings in addition to the mansion, each with some type of sleeping quarters inside. They include:
- The Ice House – A private cottage with a king size bed, a fireplace and jacuzzi tub.
- The Barn – Featuring two pet friendly rooms with queen size beds, fireplaces and private decks.
- The Cottage – A private cottage with queen size bed, fireplace and jacuzzi.
