East Hampton’s Historic Districts

The Mill House Inn is located in the Hook Historic District directly across the street from Old Hook Mill.

The iconic Main Street Historic District is only a 10-minute walk from the Mill House Inn. If you love architecture and history, then you’ll fall in love with the area which has long been home to Manhattan socialites. You’ll see home styles that harken back to 1715 through the 1920s. Styles include Craftsman, Federal, Colonial, Queen Anne, and Shingle. Stroll the streets and enjoy the lovely manicured landscapes and statuesque trees.

The Hunting Lane Historic District is less than a mile from the Mill House. View the Barnes-Hassam House, the Conklin-Eldrege House, the Gansett House, the Hulse House, the Dickerson House, and the William Jenney House along its expanse to learn about the area’s history and its architectural significance.

The Beaches

One of the greatest attractions in the area is the Main Beach, consistently voted one of the top beaches in the world, and only about a mile from the inn.  Wildlife viewing a plenty whether it be the Piping Clovers, Humpback Whales or even the occasional super model or celebrity searching for seashells. Stroll along the sandy expanse and hunt for treasures while soaking up the beauty of the crashing waves. On a sunny day, you can catch a few rays while you lounge surf side.

Beyond Main Beach, there are numerous other ocean, bay and harbor beaches – each with their own unique charm.

Guild Hall

Guild Hall is home to a variety of performances and exhibitions. Be sure to check the events schedule so you can make reservations in advance. You can also opt to have your Mill House personal assistant try to score you the most coveted seats at the more popular events.

East Hampton Historical Society

East Hampton Historical Society and the Village of East Hampton maintain a number of historic museums and homes available for your exploration.

Home, Sweet Home Museum

The iconic Home, Sweet Home Museum is a lean-to, often referred to as a ‘saltbox’ that dates back to the early 1700s. James Lane originally built the home. Relatives of John Howard Payne resided at the residences which are where the lyrics from the song ‘Home Sweet Home’ emerged. Now the premises are home to a museum that commemorates the area’s history.

Mulford Farm

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Mulford Farm is a must-see site for anyone who loves history. The fully intact farmstead is an English Colonial that dates to 1680. It was once the site of three successful blacksmith shops plus the local Mulford family farmed on the fourteen acres. The farmhouse was home to 10 generations up until 1949.

Balsam Farm

Balsam Farm is the closest of the many wonderful and local farms to the Inn featuring seasonal produce and artisanal prepared foods.  In addition, your innkeeper would be happy to help provide information should you want to explore any of the great local wineries, breweries, and fish farms.

As you can see with the bevy of things to do around the area, one night at the Mill House Inn isn’t going to be enough!  You’ll need to spend several days exploring and then retreat to the Inn for a good night’s sleep on the luxurious linens and bedding in your boutique room so you wake rested for another day of adventure. Without a doubt, you’ll be glad that you booked extra days to enjoy the area and relax at the Inn.
