History
Falmouth, MA, was first settled in 1660 by English colonists and was officially incorporated in 1686. Note that Bartholomew Gosnold formally named the settlement for Falmouth, Cornwall, England, his home port.
Some of the early activities in the town were salt works, farming, shipping, sheep husbandry, and whaling. Sheep husbandry was very popular in the area because of the introduction of Merino sheep as well as the launch of water-powered mills that could easily process the wool.
The town was heavily bombarded by the British from the sea during the American Revolution and once again during the famous War of 1812. Keep in mind that Katharine Lee Bates’ birthplace (author of the popular national hymn “America the Beautiful”) is also preserved in this town.
