History
Pacific Grove, CA, was founded in early 1875 when David Jacks officially sold the land to the Pacific Improvement Company. The company donated acreage toward the maiden West Coast Chautauqua retreat that was formed by Methodists who modeled this town after Ocean Grove, NJ.
Used by Methodists as a religious retreat, Pacific Grove remains a center for conferences of various religious groups. Keep in mind that alcohol was banned in the town until 1969. On Jun 1, 1875, the famous Pacific Grove Retreat Association was created in San Francisco, CA, for administering the Christian Seaside Resort in the town.
Over the years, fragrant pines, butterflies, and fresh sea air brought many others to the Pacific Grove Retreat to meditate and rest. Also, the first camp meeting of the Pacific Coast branch of the popular Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle was held in June 1879 at the Chautauqua Hall. Like Carmel-by-the-Sea, Pacific Grove became an artists’ haven, especially in the 1890s.
Activities
While plenty of tourists and locals explore the oceanfront trails and enjoy dining excursions, the town remains peaceful and quaint. This quiet California town is filled with many excellent activities for a fun and memorable weekend getaway.
Pacific Grove is home to the oldest continuously operated lighthouse on the US West Coast. You can head to the Point Pinos Lighthouse, which has been in operation since 1885. It stands on the northern edge of the Monterey Peninsula and overlooks the coast.
Today, visitors can go inside and learn about the operation and history of this historic site with volunteer docents. And the furnishings and fittings reflect life during the time of Emily Fish, a noble keeper of this lighthouse from 1893 to 1914.
You can also enjoy fireworks and have fun at the Feast of Lanterns. This vibrant summer festival has been a unique tradition of Pacific Grove for more than a century. The feast is held in July and attracts tourists from all over. During this time, the whole town is beautifully decorated with many kaleidoscopic Kongming lanterns.
If you are a golfer, it’ll be hard to leave the beautiful Monterey Peninsula without playing a round of golf. Nearby Pebble Beach boasts some of the world’s best courses, so if this sounds like your perfect idea of a getaway, be sure and bring along your clubs.
The Pacific Grove Museum is another great attraction and is your personal field guide to the gorgeous California Central Coast. You can explore the wildlife and birds, plants, cultural richness, and geology that make this region unique. You can even take a stroll through Pacific Grove to admire the charming and distinct Victorian-style homes.
