Historic Cape May Hotel
On the shores of Cape May, NJ, one of the country’s oldest vacation resort destinations, sits the Carroll Villa Hotel. As the pioneer of New Jersey eco-tourism, the Carroll Villa merges boutique Cape May accommodations and Victorian charm. This Cape May hotel is over 100 years old and is home to The Mad Batter Restaurant, which has routinely been named one of the best restaurants in Cape May. Legend has it that Harry Kulkowitz, the original owner, won The Carroll Villa in a poker game. The reality is, he fell in love with the building. Where others saw a “fixer-upper”, Harry saw a gathering place for food and art lovers. Although he owned an art gallery in Philadelphia, Harry Kulkowitz didn’t have the financing to buy the building, but a man from Cape May, Henry Gorelick, put in a good word for him at the bank.
Kulkowitz became an innkeeper and restauranteur and named his restaurant The Mad Batter. At the time, Cape May had few restaurants and no fine dining in town. With the induction of the Mad Batter, the Cape May restaurant scene exploded.
A Family Affair
While Harry Kulkowitz was launching the hotel and making a name for himself as an innkeeper and restauranteur, his son Mark was in Europe with the Army. After being discharged, and with some prodding from his father, Mark came to Cape May and started working at the Carroll Villa Hotel.
Mark and his wife Pam have been running the hotel and restaurant for 30 years and have three children of their own, all of whom have grown up in the business just like their father.
The three children have had their hand in the growth of the business; Kyle runs the bar, Marta, along with her mother, has updated the guest rooms to be more contemporary, moving away from the Victorian sensibilities which characterized the property over the decades, and Tess helps in the summer months when she is not in college.
