History
The area of Wausau has for decades changed hands between many indigenous peoples. For example, the historic Ojibwe occupied the area during the period of European encounters. And they had a profitable fur trade for decades with French Canadians and French colonists. It was the famous Wisconsin River that initially drew many settlers to this region originally called Big Bull Falls.
These settlers migrated west into the famous Great Lakes region after the construction of the Erie Canal in the state of New York. This was important as it provided a great route for products from this region to New York as well as other eastern markets.
A treaty transferring land in 1836 along the Wisconsin River to federal ownership from the Indians sent all George Stevens’ lumbermen up this river two years later to find appropriate places for converting the pine forests into lumber.
And by 1840, the Stevens sawmill was efficiently processing the pine forests into lumber. Note that it wasn’t long before other mills started cropping up along the riverbanks of central Wisconsin.
Also, the completion of the important Wisconsin Valley Railroad led to Wausau’s economic growth and expansion. And as the lumber industry declined in the region, Wausau started to export iron, quartz, and paper.
