Bennington Bed and Breakfast – Four Chimneys Inn

If Bennington, VT, had to be described in only a few words, the description would resemble something along the lines of a sweet all-American town. And what better way to immerse yourself in that atmosphere than by staying at a quintessential New England bed and breakfast

We have just the place: The Four Chimneys Inn is a relaxing retreat or a fantastic homebase for exploring everything southwest Vermont has to offer. The Inn is a short 2.5 hour drive from Vermont’s capital, Montpelier, less than one hour away from Anbany, NY, and 3 hours away from Boston, MA.

When driving into town, you’ll notice that The Four Chimneys Inn is conveniently located on the outskirts of Bennington: you can get peace and quiet while still being close to all of the fun amenities near the center. The sprawling 11-acre estate encompasses views of nearby nature and has 11 rooms that will captivate even the most particular traveler. In fact, each room harmoniously combines touches of contemporary chic while still retaining an atmosphere of old-world charm.

Take, for example, Room 6 with its inviting turquoise-and-white color scheme and darling touches like the wicker cabinets, antique pedestal sink, and jetted tub. The cheerful atmosphere will make it that much harder to leave!

The most impressive room at The Four Chimneys is, perhaps, Room 8, a deluxe king suite that is located in the private Ice House. This split, two-level room has a plush king-sized bed and separate bathroom on the ground floor. A quick walk up the spiral wooden staircase reveals a loft-style living room complete with a desk, love seat, television, and two twin beds.

The exposed brick wall, crackling fireplace, and timber-framed ceiling give it an especially warm and inviting atmosphere.

Although Bennington is an attractive town to visit for any traveler, it’s a must-see for history lovers. The Bennington Battle Monument, a symbol of the turning point in the Revolutionary War, is just a quick 15-minute walk from the Inn, while Hildene, the historic residence of Abraham Lincoln’s family, is a 30-minute drive to the north. And how could we forget about the famous covered bridges? Vermont has more than 100 of these historical artifacts that harken back to the days of the 19th century: the closest are the Silk Road, Paper Mill Village, and Burt Henry Bridge, all within a 10-minute drive. Just ask the innkeepers for tips and directions to best plan out your excursion.

Since we’re on the subject of historical treasures, how could we forget about The Four Chimneys Inn’s own building? Although the original building dates to 1783, a fire burned down the historic structure in 1910 and was rebuilt from the foundation up in 1913. In the 1950s, the building was transformed into the place to be seen for the ‘it crowd,’ including superstars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and even Walt Disney. There’s even a legend that Norman Rockwell painted a mural in the dining room, but you’ll have to come for yourself and ask the innkeeper to get the full story — we won’t spoil the secret!
