Yountville Bed and Breakfast | Maison Fleurie, a Four Sisters Inn

Before even setting sight on Maison Fleurie, it has two things going for it not many other inns can claim.

First, it is one of the 16 boutique inns that comprise Four Sisters Inns, a collection of exceptional boutique bed & breakfast hotels located in various desirable destinations throughout California.

Chosen for their unique location, history, and architecture, each Four Sisters Inn, is distinctive in its own right and reflects the color and character imbued by a combination of their past and current owners. Set in amiable Yountville, Maison Fleurie is reminiscent of boutique French countryside inns.

Second, it’s in Napa Valley. Not much else need be said. Oh, but let’s have some fun and brag on it anyway.

History

Originally built in 1873 as a hotel for travelers, it was quite the lively spot owing to its saloon (with rumored bordello) and proximity to the railroad station in Yountville. One of its three buildings is named after the bakery that was part of the original set up and still produces pastry delights today.

After years of neglect, a couple who saw the hotel’s future as their new home purchased it in the 1960s. However, the project proved too ambitious and they sold it to another couple who renovated it into a six-room inn and restaurant.

1993 saw another ownership change when Four Sisters Inns purchased the property and provided another extensive upgrade to the 13-room beauty it is today. Great care was taken to maintain the brick and stone appeal that connects today’s guests with its distant past. Many contemporary additions abound across this lovely property as a result of further remodeling, even as it maintains its colorful character.

Blooms & Breakfast

The “Flowering House” takes its name from the myriad flowers and blooms that populate the gardens and compete with the nearby vineyards for your attention. Former Four Sisters President Shelley Post travelled frequently to the Provence region of France and her passion for culture is reflected in much of the interior as well as subtle touches that delight.

Start your day with a sumptuous breakfast that will fuel you for the day’s vineyard tours. Hand-crafted menu items made from scratch complemented by fresh fruit are sure to have you merrily on your way. Once the day’s travels are complete, relax by the pool with your favorite vino as you sample the inn’s complimentary signature wine & cheese mini-picnic for two.

Warmth & Invite

Fashioned after a southern France wine country home, its style is a composite of warm and homey mixed with more recent renovations. Exposed brick from an old church and stone from local quarries dominate the main dining/sitting room. These textured features extend to some of the guestrooms as well.

These earth tones, warmed by the fire while sipping a glass of your favorite wine, will certainly chase any chill off a Northern California night. Sink back into one of the cushy chairs, pick up a favorite book and you might find yourself waking to the breakfast call!

And a nice touch for guests with disabilities is the ADA assistance they offer. Learn more at the Maison Fleurie website.

Sites & Cities

In addition to the plethora of vineyards and wine caves in and around the Yountville area, there is no shortage of low-key entertainment offering up the cozy and comfortable. From cooking classes to hot air balloon rides, young and old will find something captivating. There’s even a touch of world-class less than a mile away in the form of the Napa Valley Performing Arts Center at Lincoln Theater.

However, if a more energized agenda is on the books, the Bay Area cities of San Francisco and Oakland are a short drive away. The connection with San Francisco goes back even further to its early days as one of the inn’s balconies originally came from the old French Hospital. Charm and aura are in no short supply at Maison Fleurie, the oldest hotel in the Napa Valley.

For those wanting to stretch their legs a bit, consider a jaunt further afield and take in the tasting rooms, wine caves, boutique shops, and walking & biking trails that populate the area. So put your dibs on one of the first-come-first-served bicycles for that relaxing spin around town or a bit of window shopping.

Napa Valley is famous for its rich cultural heritage. Come and sample the heart of what’s best about this fascinating region. Revel in today’s modern amenities while you connect with the colorful past. It can all be yours at the Maison Fleurie.
