Not many builders can boost a reputation of bringing art to life. This is precisely what Warren Roche did when creating The Topanga Canyon Inn.  Warren Roche, the original designer and builder, still owns the homes to this day. He and his wife Elena live a third of a mile up the road from Topanga Canyon Inn next to a back entrance to Topanga State Park, and they will be your hosts when staying there. Elena is a plein-air artist whose paintings line the walls of this Topanga Bed and Breakfast.

The architecture of The Topanga Canyon Inn is rooted in California’s history and has strong influences of Mediterranean vernacular style. Roche was able to visually grasp the area’s Pre-Depression style and atmosphere. The breathtaking surrounding scenery coupled with this beautiful architecture have guests believing they have been magically transported to the countryside of Italy.

The Topanga Canyon Inn is the leading Bed and Breakfast in Topanga, California. Many guests find it hard to believe that Casa Blanca and Casa Rosa, the two houses that make up the gorgeous Topanga Canyon Inn, are only 35 years old. They were designed and built in 1987 and 1990, respectively. Those interested are able to keep a small piece of The Topanga Canyon Inn by purchasing one of Elena’s original paintings.

Indoor attractions include visiting the boutique shops at Topanga Pine Tree Circle Village. Previous guests of the Topanga Canyon Inn especially like Topanga Art Gallery and Hidden Treasures Vintage. Both of which are found in the Pine Tree Village. If you’re up for a short drive, greater Los Angeles is a 15 minute trip where dining and shopping can be enjoyed. You can see the wonders of the water by exploring Santa Monica Bay.

Aesthetically Astonishing

Though the Inn is still young it evokes the Mediterranean spirit of the indigenous peoples of California’s past. A true characteristic of the area, traditional tile patterns can be seen woven into each aspect of the Inn. The signature red roof of the Mediterranean can be seen before even stepping foot into the breathtaking inn. Peachy Saltillo tile lines the floors while different colored Talavera tiles from Pueblo encompass the stair risers.

The two homes that form the Topanga Canyon Inn are rightfully named after their traditionally colored plastered walls –Casa Blanca (the white house) and Casa Rosa (the pink house). Mediterranean architecture includes plaster walls with an abundance of wood doors and beams.

Spirit Traps are embedded at the threshold of doors at entrance points throughout the Inn. These broken tilework masterpieces are inspired by Moorish folklore, The folklore advises complex, maze-like patterns be placed near entrances to protect against malicious spirits seeking to enter the home and cause injury or destruction to the inhabitants.
